Raisin-Wheat Bread: 1 tsp. oil, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 egg whites, 1 cup unsweetened applesauce, 2 cups buttermilk, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1 to 2 T. caraway seeds (opt), 3/4 cup raisins, 1/2 cup Grape-Nuts cereal, 2 1/2 cups flour, 1 cup whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup wheat germ, 1 T. baking powder
Spray a Bundt or 10-inch tube pan with nonstick spray and then lightly flour. Mix oil and sugar together. Add egg whites and applesauce, stir. Combine buttermilk, baking soda, and caraway seeds, raisins and Grape-Nuts cereal. Add to sugar-applesauce mixture and mix well. Combine flours, wheat germ and baking powder. Stir dry ingredients into rest of mixture and spoon batter into prepared pan. Bake 350 degrees for 55 to 65 minutes or until done when tested in center with wooden toothpick. Cool pan for 10 minutes and then remove and cool on rack. Slice when cool. Makes 20 slices.
Bunco: Bunco winners were Hilda Dean, first; Carlena Hjaltalin, second; Helen Beckner, third; Lisa Myers, fourth.
Bunco is played the last Monday of each month at Freda Albert’s house in Santa.
Birthday: Caron Foster of Emida celebrated her birthday with family. She was born on April 1, 1944 in St. Maries.
Caron, her husband, Ivan, and their daughter, Debi Foster of Moscow and Caron’s sisters, Margaret Wheeler and Phoebe Shelden of St. Maries; her nieces, Kris Brusseau and Sherry Hill from Santa celebrated Caron’s birthday at the golf course in St. Maries.
Bingo: There were nine people at UpRiver Bingo April 3. Dave Ausman was the caller. Winners were Hilda Dean, Cathy Anderson, Francine Mills, Anna Rowsey, Jodi Carney, Don Mills and Joyce Sterkel.
UpRiver Bingo is played Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fernwood Senior Center. Cash prizes are awarded to winners over 18. Refreshments and snacks are available. Everyone is welcome.
Weight Club: There were four members present at the April 4 meeting of the UpRiver Weight Club. Cathy Anderson was the Queen of the Week and is in first place in the “Hopping into Spring” contest. There are two weeks remaining in the contest.
Cathy Anderson has met her first 10 pounds off goal for the year.
The UpRiver Weight Club meets Friday mornings in the basement of the Fernwood Church. Weigh in begins at 8:30 a.m. with the meeting to follow. New members are always welcome.
Science Fair: The 2014 Science Fair is April 9 and April 10 for children in second through sixth grades. Judging will be Wednesday after school. The Science Fair will be open to the public following the judging.
Book Fair: The Book Fair continues through April 11. Parent’s Night is April 9 (tonight) from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
Testing: The fifth grade will be doing ISAT Testing in Science on April 10. The third/fourth grades will be doing SBAC testing in English/Language on April 15.
Candidates: Russ Fulcher is running for Idaho Governor and Lawrence Denny is seeking bid for Secretary of State. They will be at the Fernwood CAF Building on April 10, 6:30 p.m. Free to the public. Chris Troupis is seeking the bid for attorney general.
Conferences: Parent/Teacher Conferences are April 11. There will be no school for students.
Breakfast: The Sewer Ladies will sponsor a Breakfast and Raffle at the Fernwood CAF Building on April 12 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The menu includes pancakes, French toast, breakfast burritos, biscuits and gravy, eggs, ham, potatoes and choice of beverage. The cost at the door will be $6.
Raffle: Items for the Breakfast Raffle will be a $50 gift certificate for Triple XXX Feed and a $20 certificate for Bud’s Burger. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Winners need not be present to win. Proceeds go to the “Hardship Fund.”
Meeting: The Board Management meeting will be at UpRiver School on April 14, 6:30 p.m.
PTO: The UpRiver PTO will meet on April 15 at 7:30 a.m. in the school.
Quilting: The Emida Quilters meet Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Emida Community Center. Bring a lunch. Coffee is provided. Everyone is welcomed.

Easter Egg Hunt: The annual UpRiver PTO’s Easter Egg Hunt will be April 19, 10 a.m. Volunteers are needed. Contact the school office at 245-3650.
Easter Sunrise Service: The Emida Church will hold its Easter Sunrise Service at the Mr. and Mrs. Hindman’s house in Elkhorn Meadows at 7:30 a.m. Everyone is welcomed. There will be a Breakfast Potluck following at the church.

Poetry Slam: The Friends of the Tri-Community Library’s third annual UpRiver Poetry Slam is at 1 p.m. April 26 at the UpRiver School. All interested poets are encouraged to submit their original work by April 18, either at the school or the Tri-Community Library. Cash prizes will be awarded to the best adult poem, over 16 years of age. First place will receive $25, second place $15.
Children’s age divisions include those up to age 15. Prizes include $15 for first place and second place will receive $5. Participants will have up to three minutes to present one original poem. No props, costumes, foul language, musical instruments or multiple performers are allowed. Performance will be given a numerical score on a scale of one to five and will be judged on content, presentation and style. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
