A woman suspected of felony arson in Calder was arrested without incident in Benewah County this month.
Jamie L. Jones, 45, of Fernwood, was taken into custody the morning of October 8 by Benewah County Undersheriff Tyler Morris and booked into jail in Shoshone County. She is suspected of burning down the house of Richard E. Rogers, Jr., on August 30.
The fire was reported around 7:30 a.m. that morning at Rogers’ home, 12 1st St. in Calder. Several agencies responded, including the St. Maries Fire Department, and the blaze was out quickly without spreading past Rogers’ house. The flames destroyed the east side of the house, and the remaining structure was declared a total loss.
“Local fire personnel and Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to the scene, finding the cause of the fire to be suspicious and consistent with an arson,” the department said in a statement. “After a thorough investigation, a suspect was identified as being Jamie L. Jones.”
Rogers had been arrested on August 27 after a fatal collision in Calder. He is suspected of running a woman over after an argument, and was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.
The victim, a neighbor, died at the scene. Rogers fled the area but was soon found unconscious parked along the St. Joe River Road by Benewah County Sheriff’s Deputies. He was in jail in Wallace when his house caught fire.
Jones is scheduled for a preliminary hearing the morning of October 26.
