Virus prompts CH changes

Following the closure of the Benewah County Courthouse to the public, due to coronavirus, county offices have placed secure drop boxes in the lobby for people to deposit forms and payments.

The Benewah County courthouse is operating at a reduced level in response to the coronavirus.

The Idaho Supreme Court ordered a litany of adjustments to courthouse proceedings effective March 16, 2020 to April 10, 2020.

Certain in-person appearances for criminal and civil cases are excused, many cases will be rescheduled and limits on who will be allowed into the courtroom are in place.

The exemption to in-person appearances does not apply to emergency matters, child protection hearings, domestic violence hearings and evidentiary hearings in criminal cases.

Some hearings may be conducted via telephone or video conference.

According to the Supreme Court order judges should use “telephonic or video technology for all necessary hearings, including arraignments and mental health hearings.”

A secure drop box for court documents is located in the lobby of the Benewah County Courthouse.

The courthouse staff is available to answer questions regarding proceedings scheduled March 16, to April 10.
