St. Maries kicks off its summer concerts

Serena Crane, Tom Ebert, Linda Weinmann, Craig Wicks and Yvette Benham of the St. Maries Chamber of Commerce invite residents to enjoy a summer of music, food and fun at the Summer Sunset Concert Series staring this Friday, June 7. The first act will be singer-songwriter Bill Bozly, and a new act will be featured each Friday throughout the summer.

St. Maries residents can look forward to another summer of music in the St. Maries city park this year.

Twelve acts will make their way to St. Maries each week to perform in the Summer Sunset Concert Series. The free event will include musical performances in a number of genres, as well as food, beverages and other goods for sale by vendors.

Organizer Craig Wicks said this will be the series’ second year, featuring musical acts from around the Pacific Northwest to perform in the amphitheater. The amphitheater was completed in summer 2016, but rarely hosted public events for years after that. Mr. Wicks said the concert series was a way to utilize the facility and encourage area residents to come into town for the events.

“This band shell sat empty for two or three years,” he said. “As a chamber, we wanted to get more events in St. Maries and bring people into town. This is another way to show businesses the chamber’s working on their behalf.”

The first concert series featured a new musical act each week from June through August, including both local talent and others from around the area. Residents reacted well to the series, and the popular demand encouraged the chamber to bring the series back for a second year.

“It’s been a very popular event,” he said. “We had anywhere from 50 to 175 attendees last year on any given night,” he said.

As with last year’s event, the series will feature food, refreshments and other goods for sale by local vendors. The first show June 7 will feature food provided by the St. Maries Lutheran Church. In a new addition to the festivities, The Grapple will be at the event serving alcoholic beverages to adults over the age of 21.

The first act for the event will be Bill Bozly, a singer-songwriter from Coeur d’Alene who composes and performs his own songs. He has performed in concerts in across both North America and Europe, focusing on acoustic rock and related genres. Mr. Bozly will also return at the final show of the series Aug. 23 as part of the band Blue Mustang.

Attendance for all shows of the Summer Sunset Concert Series are free of charge, and all are invited to attend. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating, including chairs, blankets or umbrellas, to the event. Due to city ordinance, no dogs are allowed in the park during the event.
