Two men were taken by air ambulance from a logging operation in the Benewah Creek area, July 22.

The Benewah County Sheriff Office identified the men as Patrick McQuade, 44, and Bryan Reid, 64.

According to Benewah County Sheriff Dave Resser, the accident occurred at approximately 9:20 a.m. on Echo Springs Road. He said the men were conducting equipment maintenance on a line machine when the accident occurred.

“It was a tire. One of the old fashioned wheels that has a snap ring on it on the wheel to hold the tire on and they are known to be quite deadly at times,” Sheriff Resser said. “From what I was told they had the tire upside down with the ring down and the ring blew off and pushed the ring and the tire into the two gentlemen.”

According to emergency personnel, both men received extensive injuries and were evacuated by Life Flight.

A representative for Life Flight said the men were transported to a regional trauma center but did not provide a specific location citing patient privacy.

Kootenai Health and Sacred Heart in Spokane did not respond to requests for information in time for this story.

Efforts to contact the accident victims and their family members were unsuccessful.
