The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) seeks comment on a draft water reuse permit for the Kootenai School District.

The draft permit would allow the district’s municipal wastewater treatment and reuse facility to continue to irrigate with recycled water for a period of five years.

The draft also establishes monitoring requirements, limits on nutrient and hydraulic loading and buffer zones established by DEQ. The facility was required to show that the operation would not cause public health or environmental concerns as a part of the permitting process.

The Kootenai School District applies approximately 1.7 million gallons per year of Class C recycled water to 5.7 acres of grass hay during the growing season.

The DEQ will accept written comments on the draft permit until 5 p.m. August 16.

Copies of the draft permit as well as staff analysis are available for public review at the DEQ’s Coeur d’Alene Regional Office at 2110 Ironwood Parkway.

Comments can be emailed to Senior Water Quality Engineer, Chris Westerman, at chris.westerman@deq.idaho.gov.
