A lack of mufflers and the use of Jake brakes were a topic of discussion at the Benewah County Commissioner meeting Monday.

Sheriff Dave Resser reported his office receives complaints about noisy log trucks with some frequency.

“There are a lot of trucks that are not running mufflers and they are horrendously loud,” Sheriff Resser said. “So we get a lot of complaints about noise.”

There is nothing his officers can do, however, because there is no law that applies.

Commissioner Jack Buell, who owns a large trucking company, said he believes trucks are required to have mufflers. Previously he said the Forest Service mandated mufflers as a way to reduce fire danger.

Commissioner Bob Short echoed Sheriff Resser’s comments about complaints about noise.

“It is really bad in Santa where you have hills in both directions,” Mr. Short said.

The commissioners said they prefer for truck owners to fix the problem rather than pass an ordinance.

“I don’t know why they can’t use some common sense and solve the problem themselves,” Mr. Short said.

Bob Short likes to equate everything with Santa. It's the same in Fernwood Bob. Drive south 4 more miles to Fernwood and see and listen to the jake brakes!
