The Elks Fishing Derby is back and organizers are looking for anglers that are hooked on the sport.
The fishing derby is June 20, and those who enter the derby will be able to fish the St. Joe and Coeur d’Alene Lake Drainage and the Coeur d’Alene Lake.
The event is sponsored by Felton’s Auto Sales.
The Elks Lodge said that it will host the derby and weigh in as normal but will not host an awards banquet or raffle this year due to coronavirus concerns.
Elks Lodge Exalted Ruler, Leo Potter, said that he hopes that things will return to normal at next year’s derby.
“We were excited to be able to do the derby this year despite the fact we won’t be having the banquet or raffles,” Mr. Potter said. “We will have the weigh in and announce prizes as normal but hopefully next year we will be able to do the full event like usual."
Mr. Potter said that the Elk’s Lodge decided to rename the Fishing Derby after the late Jim McCuaig who founded the event 13 years ago.
“He started it all and kept it going, so we renamed the derby after him,” Mr. Potter said. “He was really a big mover and shaker in the lodge, and we thought it was appropriate to do it.”
There will be four categories for children and adults to enter in. Those categories are based on catching certain kinds of fish such as blue back and salmon, pike, pan fish, and tinch fish.
There will be awards given to winners under 13 years of age for each category.
Tickets for the event can be found at the Elks Lodge, St. Joe Sport Stop and the Blue Goose through June 19. Ticket sales will go back towards adult category winners.
The event will take place all day on Saturday and measurements will be taken between 4:00 p.m and 5:00 p.m in the Elks Lodge parking lot.
Winners will be awarded at 5:30 p.m.
Tickets for adults are $10.00 and children 13 and under can fish for free.
