Paul Allen Swenson, loving husband, father of five daughters, died peacefully at home surrounded by family Wednesday, December 11, 2019. He was 81.
Paul was born September 1, 1938 in Springfield, Minn., the son of Roland and Harriet Swenson. Paul moved to St. Maries in the late 80s with his wife Maxine. They built their retirement dream home on Round Lake Road, where they lived for the next 30 years.
Paul was a member of the Elks, the St. Maries Gun Club and a volunteer for CASA. He had many talents and interests. Paul was member of a barbershop quartet for many years. He was crazy about his grandchildren and visited them often for their games, weddings and graduations. He had a passion for training and showing his Labrador Retrievers. He trained, competed and many times won the highest honors with his dogs.
He also had a passion for hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends.
Paul will be remembered and loved by many kids in this community as “Paul the Bus driver.” He drove the sports bus to out of town games for many years. Paul had a big heart, especially for those in need. It wasn’t uncommon for him to purchase meals for the kids on the bus who had little or no resources.
He never met a stranger. He was known for his infectious smile, his kind and compassionate spirit, and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife Maxine; his sister Marlene (Don) Hastings; daugthers Kim (Russ) Shore, Kay (Jeff) Carlson, Jenny (John) McApline, Kelly Schwefel, Jill (Gary) Matteson; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Harriet, and brother Doug (Julie).
A private celebration for the family will be at a later date, per Paul’s wishes.
