This is the time of year that people, mostly reporter-people, fuss and muss about all the promises politicians do not keep. And sure, it’s worthwhile to remind the political class of the things they said that did not happen.
But there is a bigger story about broken promises. It happens every four years but never gets the attention it deserves.
Those are the promises celebrities make and never keep.
It was just last week that John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen promised to leave the United States if Donald Trump is re-elected. And lest you think this is just another example of rich liberals demonstrating just how much better they are than the rest of us – they really mean it.
John did more than simply say he would leave the United States if Trump wins the election, he explained what a massive sacrifice it would be for him.
And we’re not talking about the fact he just bought a $17.5 million house in Beverly Hills. No doubt that if come November 4 he has to pick-up and leave he could take a loss on that purchase.
You must remember that John and Chrissy really are that much better than the rest of us. Even if he loses a few million on his recent real estate venture, that’s not the reason John says leaving the United States would be such a sacrifice.
Not at all.
The sacrifice – one he is willing to make – would be he will miss his family. But it’s something he just has to do because, if Trump does win the election, he and his wife agree they will be forced to move where there is “actual” democracy.
There’s only a couple things one can say when a rich, preachy, left-wing celebrity threatens to move if you vote for the wrong person. The first is “That’s a good start” – the second is “Grab a friend and form a line.”
Of course it will never happen.
John and his wife have no intention of leaving their estate in Beverly Hills to search for “actual” democracy. If Trump wins, John and Miss Chrissy will remain ensconced in their fancy home. Other than luxury vacations, this rich couple will not leave the U.S. at all.
They know they have to be here for the next election so they can once again lecture the rest of us about our ignorance should we favor a candidate they don’t like.
When it comes to broken promises, Hollywood celebrities make amateurs of politicians.
The legend of moving celebrities did not start with John Legend. What’s more, it grows with every presidential election. It is habit for celebrities to make promises about leaving the United States – getting our hopes up and all – then not following through.
Whoopi Goldberg, Snoop Dog, Miley Cyrus, Amy Schumer, Cher, Lena Dunham, Barbara Streisand and a host of other celebrity-types have all promised to move – but never did.
But give it to John and Chrissy for great timing.
While it is not rare for rich, liberal Hollywood-types to makes noises about moving, John and Chrissy made their announcement about the same time the State Department released statistics for the green-card lottery.
And those numbers are telling.
There is a big jump in applications from Africa. Big jump. Given what we’ve been told, this is surprising. Good liberals, especially the Hollywood Left, continually yak and blabber about racism in America.
But if we’re all such racists, why do so many black people want to come here and live with us?
But hey, this does present an opportunity.
If we could ship our ultra-rich-entitled-preachy-types to Africa in exchange for people driven to work hard to improve their lives - while at the same time thanking this country for the opportunity it offers – the rest of us would come out ahead.
