The mission of the sheriff’s office is to serve and protect. After reading the Wednesday’s article in the Gazette Record there seems to be some confusion.

Benewah Community Hospital has a temporary face mask policy in place to protect the staff, patients and the community. This is not a violation of anyone’s rights, it is a matter of courtesy and respect for others. I am disappointed with the conduct of the deputies.

As public servants they should be leaders and set a positive example and support the hospital’s policy. This is serving and protecting.

If anti-maskers can put aside the politics that infect this division, maybe they will understand that the call for mask-wearing isn’t a step toward governmental tyranny but, rather, a constitutionally-based step toward preserving humankind.
