The cost of a quarter

Alberto Arroyo gets a block from Sammy Allen #67 during the second quarter of Lakeside's opener with Mullan/St. Regis Aug. 28.

Lakeside football Coach Chris Dohrman stopped at the 40 yard line and took a long stare at the scoreboard before heading off for the halftime break Aug. 28.

The Knights’ coach watched his team, down only two after the first quarter, get outscored 0-32 by Mullan/St. Regis in the second frame and take a 22-56 deficit into the half.

Lakeside would tighten up defensively in the third and fourth quarters to allow just two touchdowns the rest of the way, but the 32-point halftime deficit proved too large to overcome in a 36-70 defeat.

“We definitely looked like a young team,” Coach Dohrman, now in his eighth season as head coach, said. “We made a lot of mistakes, didn’t take care of the ball and didn’t tackle well and that really cost us. We also did some really good things. I thought on offense, we moved the ball well at times, we just need to be more consistent.”

The Knights travel to face Lewis County Saturday in what will be the Knights’ longest road trip this season. The two teams played once in 2019, Lakeside coming away the 24-14 victors.

“We have a great group of athletes that are working hard, and will look to improve this week,” Coach Dohrman said.

In the opener with Mullan/St. Regis, quarterback Tucker Sanchez threw for 143 yards and one touchdown on 13 completions. Tucker also rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown in the effort.

Receiver J.J. Hall caught two passes for 28 yards and rushed for an additional 52 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Newcomer Vander Brown made an impact in his first game, scoring on a lateral play in the first quarter, and returning a first-quarter kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown.
