St. Maries’ wrestling team will compete in its toughest tournament this weekend at the North Idaho Rumble, set for Friday and Saturday at Coeur D’ Alene High.
But the challenge is welcome for Coach Dennis Humphrey and the Lumberjacks, who have picked up momentum in recent weeks leading up to the district championships in mid February.
“It’ll be good for us,” Coach Humphrey said. “We’ll probably get beat up on a little bit, but this experience we’ll get over there is invaluable.”
The team is coming off the Clearwater Valley duals, where it went 4-2 to take home third place.
Dylan Sotin, Shaun Anderson and Sam Martin each went undefeated as the Lumberjacks defeated Orofino, Melba and McCall-Donnelly, and narrowly lost to Clearwater Valley, 37-38.
“All the kids wrestled really well,” Coach Humphrey. “They’ve been working hard from day one and I’ve just been real impressed with the progress they’re making.”
The team competed at Freeman Jan. 22.
Six Lumberjacks went 2-0 at the mixer comprised of all Washington schools apart from St. Maries and Kootenai.
Dylan Sotin wrestled up to 120 pounds and went 2-0. Paige Stewart, Hunter Norris, Ryan Vannatter, Trysten Lockridge and Delbert Lambson were each 2-0, as was Shuan Anderson, who wrestled up a weight class at 182 pounds.
Upcoming: St. Maries competes in the North Idaho Rumble Friday at 3 p.m., and resumes action Saturday at 9 a.m., at Coeur D’ Alene High School.
