St. Maries’ girls basketball team had its second game with Grangeville cancelled Jan. 30 due to quarantine precautions.
But the girls can earn a second meeting with the Bulldogs if they get past Orofino in a district opener next week.
The Lumberjacks and Maniacs, both with one win against the other, meet Monday in Orofino. The winner will advance to face Grangeville, while the loser will see its season end.
St. Maries took the most recent meeting between the two teams, defeating Orofino in overtime Jan. 23 and recording its highest-scoring game of the season with 74 points.
The Maniacs’ win against St. Maries was in early December when the Jacks were outscored 10-20 in the first quarter of its league opener. The Jacks rallied in the second, but fell 49-63.
The winner of Monday’s game will face Grangeville Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m.
A Bulldog win Wednesday would send Grangeville to state, while a win by either St. Maries or Orofino would force a winner-take-all game Saturday, Feb. 13.
The Lumberjacks played at Priest River Jan. 26. The Spartans, who were 2-12 going into the game, put St. Maries in a 10-point hole in the first half. The Jacks were shooting 3-30 through two quarters.
Down five at halftime, the Lumberjacks responded in the second half and claimed a 43-35 win.
“We did shoot a bit better in the second half, but the key was our defense picked up,” Coach Gary Krumheuer said. “The girls worked hard defensively, especially in the second half. It wasn’t very pretty, but once again we found a way to win a close game.”
Upcoming: Tipoff Thursday at Lakeside is set for 7 p.m., and Saturday’s home game with Genesis Prep begins at 2 p.m. Monday’s district tournament opener at Orofino is set for 6 p.m.
