Two years ago at the 2A state wrestling championships, Sam Martin and Dylan Sotin became the first freshmen from St. Maries to medal in the same year.
Now juniors, the pair continues to break school records.
Dylan, competing in the 113-pound division, earned his 100th career win in a state quarterfinal match over Clearwater Valley’s Anthony Fabbi.
He is the first Lumberjack to reach the 100-win mark as a junior.
Dylan would finish his tournament with a fourth-place mark on a 3-2 finish.
Dylan’s 100th win comes after seniors Shaun and Trysten both reached the 100-win mark earlier this year, the first time three Lumberjacks have reached the feat in the same season.
“The only downside this season is losing them,” Coach Humphrey said of Shaun and Trysten. “Those two left a mark on this program that is going to stick for a long time.”
In the 132-pound bracket, Sam took St. Maries’ highest finish of the weekend, as he won a 6-4 decision to take home third place.
Three other wrestlers from St. Maries landed on the podium, including Kyle Sibert (195) with fourth place, Delbert Lambson (220) with fifth and Shaun Anderson (170) with sixth.
“Five on the podium, we couldn’t really have had it get any better,” Coach Dennis Humphrey said. “We were young, and didn’t come out great in seeding, but knew if we flew under the radar and worked hard we could get some good finishes, and that’s exactly what they did.”
