St. Maries’ JV football team got a win in its final game following a month-long wait.
Coach Jim Buckler said the Jacks’ win at Grangeville Oct. 30 was hard-fought for a full four quarters.
Tyler Renner caught the game’s first touchdown on a pass from Cole Darnold to give St. Maries a 6-0 lead. A Bulldog interception led to a 6-6 halftime tie.
Trace Wicks moved to quarterback for the second half, and worked his way around a pile on the line of scrimmage to run 59 yards for his team’s second score of the evening.
Cole added his second touchdown of the contest in the final frame, capping a long offensive series with a 14-yard rushing touchdown.
“Our offense found some rhythm in the fourth quarter and started to make gains,” Coach Buckler said.
Grangeville’s response put the score at 20-18 in favor of St. Maries, which knelt the ball to run the clock out on a 20-18 win.
Coach Buckler credited J.J. High and Travis Wunderlich for their defensive efforts, J.J. with eight tackles and Travis contributing three sacks in the effort.
St. Maries closes its season with a 2-1 record.
