By halftime of its matchup with Priest River Nov. 24, St. Maries’ girls basketball team had already hit more shots than it did in four quarters the previous contest.

But the Lumberjacks’ new-found offense was not the most impressive part of their 61-31 victory.

Coming into its second consecutive game in St. Maries and playing to a nearly-empty gymnasium, the Lumberjacks recorded 20 steals and forced 37 turnovers in their first victory.

“The girls did what I asked them to do, and that was to play with some fire in their bellies,” Coach Gary Krumheuer said. “Our press dominated, and on offense we had good ball movement and the girls really shared the ball.”

Sami Badgett hit eight of her nine shots for 16 points in addition to pulling down five rebounds as her team took a 19-point lead into the halftime break.

Sophomore Lacie Sines made five of her seven attempts, including a three point shot, for 11 points to go with four steals.

Six Lumberjacks finished with at least six points in the outing.

“All the girls contributed to the win and played with an energy level I had yet to see this season,” Coach Krumheuer said.

Upcoming: St. Maries (1-2 before Dec. 1 game at Wallace), one week removed from its league opener Dec. 11, hosts Bonners Ferry (3-0) Friday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at St. Maries High School.
