Six points spread across three sets separated St. Maries from a state trophy bid Oct. 30.

The Lumberjacks played a marathon first set with Valley in the consolation round and eventually fell 29-31 after staving off four set points.

After taking the second, St. Maries narrowly fell in sets two and three, forcing 24-24 ties in each.

“It wasn’t the outcome we wanted at the state tournament,” Coach Rachele Fischer said. “We faced many challenges and obstacles this year, with not knowing if we would be able to have a season at all.”

The team got seven kills apiece from Shelby Martin and Kirsten Miller in the 29-31, 25-19, 24-26, 24-26 loss that ended its season.

“Success comes in many forms, and we are just thankful that we even got to play,” Coach Fischer added.

The girls opened their tournament Friday morning against Melba, falling 17-25, 12-25, 16-25 despite two kills each from Shelby, Jayden Martin, Taci Watkins and Kirsten.

St. Maries closes its season with a 9-6 record.
