Three conservation groups sued the Forest Service and Fish and Wildlife last week seeking to ban the use of bait to hunt bears because hunters have killed grizzly bears that were attracted to the bait.

Western Watersheds Project, WildEarth Guardians and Wilderness Watch filed the lawsuit June 6 in U.S. District Court in Boise. They say the groups violated environmental laws by allowing the use of bait and that eight grizzly bears havc been killed in 1995.

The suit seeks to force the Forest Service to stop allowing black bear baiting in areas of national forests in Wyoming and Idaho where grizzly bears may be.
