District One’s top pair of golf teams got off to nervous starts May 6.

St. Maries’ boys and Lakeside’s girls, both of which finished in first place at the District One Championships at Big Creek, had less-than-perfect starts to their eventual top finishes.

“We had a really slow start,” St. Maries’ Coach Bryan Chase said. “I was worried. We hit a couple out of bounds, and got a penalty for hitting the wrong ball. So, yeah, the boys definitely played better on the back side.”

The Lumberjack boys finished with a team score of 392, 13 strokes better than second-place Wallace (405).

“We struggled a bit more than I had anticipated,” Lakeside Coach Jess Arthur said. “But it was a good day of golf, and the girls impressed. It’s been close like that all season, from first to third, so it was kind of much of the same.”

The Knights’ girls team finished 45 strokes ahead of second place with their team score of 445. Tommia Pakootas took medalist honors with her score of 97.

Lakeside’s boys came in third and qualified for state, along with St. Maries’ girls, who finished second.

Freshman Tucker Sanchez led the Knights with a 103.

“Tucker came in and played really well,” Coach Arthur said. “Probably one of the best, if not the best round of golf he’s played this season.”

Both St.Maries’ and Lakeside’s boys and girls golf teams travel to River’s Edge Golf Course in Burley Monday and Tuesday.
