St. Maries’ volleyball team lost its sixth match in nine tries Monday evening as it forfeited the opportunity to host this week’s district tournament.

The Lumberjacks fell to Orofino, which will host the CIL tournament Wednesday and Thursday.

Lily Daniel dished out 31 assists as her team fell in four sets, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 16-25.

Shelby Martin and Sofia Holmes had nine kills apiece and Berkli McGreal added 16 digs in the effort.

The Lumberjacks will be seeded second Wednesday’s bracket and will face third-seeded Grangeville in a loser-out contest at 5 p.m.

St. Maries has won six of eight sets played against the Bulldogs this season, sweeping Grangeville in the first meeting Sept. 15 and winning a five-set match Oct. 16.

Shelby had 11 kills in the Lumberjacks’ 25-17, 25-19, 17-25, 20-25, 15-6 win.

“The girls played well in games one and two, but couldn’t find momentum in games three and four,” Coach Rachele Fischer said. “We gave them too many unearned points off our errors. They came back in game five determined to win.”

The girls were swept by Timberlake Oct. 14 by a score of 20-25, 22-25, 17-25.

Berkli had eight digs and Lily had 15 assists in the loss.

“Tonight was better than Monday against Troy,” Coach Fischer said. “We chased down balls that were out of system and kept them in play by being scrappy. Our serving was off, and you can’t miss serves in close games. Timberlake is always a tough opponent that challenges us, and that is what we want so we can better prepare for our league games.”

Up Next: St. Maries (3-6, 2-2 CIL) opens district play Wednesday (today) against Grangeville. The match is slated to begin at 5 p.m. at Orofino High. The winner will advance to play the Maniacs at 6:30 p.m., and the loser will be eliminated.
