Knights eager for payback

Kenyon Spotted Horse works the point for Lakeside Dec. 10 at St. Maries. Kenyon led his team with 15 points in the effort.

For the first time in 21 days, the Lakeside boys basketball team plans to be at full strength this week.

And the return of the Knights’ leading scorer could not come with better timing, because one of the two teams to beat Lakeside this season is visiting Friday.

Undefeated St. Maries, ranked #2 in the latest 2A statewide polls, handed the Knights an 11-point loss in early December, snapping their 25-game winning streak that dated back to last season.

Lakeside’s aim Friday will be to end the Lumberjacks streak, now up to 14.

The loss of starting guard Kenyon Spotted Horse two weeks ago due to COVID precautions left Lakeside without its leading scorer for five games.

The Knights were able to win four of those, getting large contributions from Vander Brown and J.J. Hall.

Vander averaged 21 points per game in place of Kenyon, and J.J. scored 18 per contest in the starter’s absence.

The team went 2-0 last week, earning a third league win Jan. 29 and defeating North Idaho Christian at home Feb. 1.

Vander scored a game-high 24 points at Genesis Prep Jan. 29 as his team ran away with a 74-43 win in Post Falls to complete a season sweep of the Jaguars for the second consecutive season.

Day Day Higgins added 19 points and J.J. had 17.

Vander again led Lakeside in scoring Feb. 1 against North Idaho Christian, scoring 18 in a 73-25 win.

Chris Matt added 13 and Qwincy Hall put up 10 for the Knights.

Lakeside hosted Timberlake Feb. 2 in a makeup game from the previously-canceled Dec. 19 date with the Tigers. Results were not available at press time.

Upcoming: Lakeside (12-2, 3-0 SIC before Feb. 2 game vs. Timberlake) hosts St. Maries (14-0, 3-0 CIL) Friday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Ron Miller Court.
