It had been eight years since St. Maries’ football team lost to Kellogg.

Last week the Wildcats made up some ground.

Three first-half touchdowns and two in the second half propelled Kellogg to a 32-0 shellacking of their 2A rivals Aug. 27 in a season opener for both teams.

St. Maries threw a pair of interceptions and was outgained 180-323 in total yardage.

“They were good,” Coach Craig Tefft said. “Everybody kind of has this mentality of what Kellogg football is, and they aren’t that way anymore. They out-executed us in pretty much everything.”

The Wildcats racked up 309 yards passing to St. Maries’ 49.

Kellogg added a punt returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, and capped the game with an interception returned for a touchdown to make the score 32-0.

The loss marked St. Maries’ first season-opening defeat since 2011.

The Lumberjacks’ nonleague home stand begins this week with Lakeside, of Nine Mile Falls, Washington.

“They are real similar to Kellogg actually,” Coach Tefft said. “Similar offensively to Kellogg, athletic quarterback like Kellogg has, so we feel like we kind of get a do-over this week.”

Following Friday’s matchup with Lakeside, the Jacks will host Freeman and Lakeland.

Up Next: St. Maries (0-1) hosts Lakeside, WA Friday at 7 p.m. in what will be the Eagles’ season opener.
