Nearly two decades have passed since the Lakeside football team qualified for a state tournament.

And Mother Nature was not going to make the Knight’s path easy last week.

A final regular season game at Wallace would determine Lakeside’s postseason fate, a win meaning it would earn a spot in the state bracket for the first time in 19 years.

On a night when the majority of high schools cancelled games due to a winter storm, a few decided to play on, one of those being Wallace, where more than eight inches covered Sather Field.

Two touchdowns in the first half and three in the second, combined with Lakeside’s stingiest defensive performance of the season, earned the Knights a 36-0 win and a date with Oakley Saturday at Parma High School.

“The team did a great job of handling the elements,” Coach Chris Dohrman said. “Playing in that much snow is hard to do and it really simplifies football. Alberto Arroyo and J.J. Hall both had great nights running the ball, and our offensive line did a great job controlling the line of scrimmage.”

Oakley (7-1) comes into Saturday’s game having lost its only game of the season, suffering a 38-40 loss to league opponent Raft River (7-1). The two teams handed each other their only losses of the season.

The Hornets averaged 55 points per game this season, and recorded two shutouts.

“Oakley is a very good football team and we will have a big challenge on our hands,” Coach Dohrman commented. “We are very excited to be in the playoffs and will leave it all out on the field this Saturday.”

In their regular-season finale with Wallace, the Knights’ defense allowed 101 yards and the offense out-rushed Wallace 227-92.

Quarterback Tucker Sanchez threw four passes and made them count, completing each for 49 yards and two touchdowns.

Alberto finished with 134 yards on the ground and one touchdown and J.J. ran for 74 yards and a touchdown to go with a touchdown catch in the third quarter.

Upcoming: Lakeside (4-2) faces Oakley in the first round of the 1AD1 tournament Saturday at Parma High School. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. PST.
