Not much about the 2020 fall season has been certain for St. Maries’ football team.

But after returning from a month-long hiatus and earning a league win last weekend, Coach Tefft and his team do know one thing:

Win Friday at Grangeville and make the playoffs. Lose, and turn in the gear.

“We get frustrated sometimes and complain about the way things have gone this year, but we just need to be thankful for every opportunity we get,” Coach Tefft said. “And this is an opportunity.”

The Bulldogs have played five games to St. Maries’ three, the winner advancing to the 2A state quarterfinals.

The two teams have both beaten Orofino, the Lumberjacks taking a 20-0 win last week and Grangeville defeating the Maniacs 42-0 two weeks ago in weather nearly 40 degrees warmer than what the Jacks played in Saturday.

“It could go either way,” Coach Tefft said. “We don’t know what the conditions will be like until we get there, but I think it’s going to be your typical St. Maries, Grangeville football game. A slugfest.”

Following a storm that dropped half a foot of snow and postponed St. Maries’ league opener with Orofino from Friday to Saturday, it took the Jacks three quarters to warm up Oct. 24.

Once St. Maries broke through on a four-yard Eli Gibson run to the endzone, a pair of touchdowns followed as the Jacks earned their first shutout in three games and took the win 20-0.

“Offensively we didn’t turn the ball over, and you always worry about security in weather like that,” Coach Tefft said. “I think as the game wore on the kids started to figure things out a little bit. We did what we needed to do. Now we just need a win Friday, and we’re moving on.”

Upcoming: St. Maries (2-1, 1-0 CIL) travels to Grangeville (3-2, 1-0 CIL) Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The winner will advance to the 2A state playoffs the following week.
