St. Maries’ JV boys basketball team overcame a 17-25 halftime deficit Jan. 18 at Grangeville to come away with a 45-41 win.
Trace Wicks scored nine points and went 5-5 from the free throw line as St. Maries outscored Grangeville 28-16 in the second half.
“Grangeville’s JV team has five seniors, and so I think our kids were intimidated, but I was so proud of the way they just kept playing,” Coach A.J. Becktel said. “They let their play speak for itself.”
Connor Wolfe led the Jacks in scoring with 12 points to go with three steals, Trace dished out three assists, Tyler Renner had six points, Tristun Hill six points and four rebounds and Tanner McMaster four rebounds in the win.
The team dropped a tight contest to Bonners Ferry Jan. 20 by a score of 39-44.
Tyler put up 10 points in the losing effort, followed by Connor with nine points, Trace with three assists and Tristun with seven rebounds.
“We played a great first half,” Coach Becktel said. “We were getting great looks; our boys did a good job of avoiding traps, reversing the ball. Then we came out in the third quarter and scored two points.”
The team hosts Orofino Saturday. Tipoff is set for noon at St. Maries High School.
