St. Maries’ girls basketball team found its offense last week and strung together five quarters of outscoring opponents.

But only one of those quarters was in a district loser-out game with Orofino.

And after running out to a 17-6 first-quarter lead over the Maniacs, the scoring touch faded; and the Lumberjacks’ season with it.

Macie Rimel and Mackenzie Hammond tallied eight points apiece and St. Maries played its final game that ended in a 32-28 deficit.

Orofino advanced to a best-of-three series with Grangeville, beginning Monday. The Bulldogs took game one 49-24 and had a chance to sweep the Maniacs Feb. 11.

The team hosted Genesis Prep for a home finale Feb. 4 and opened a 24-1 lead after the first frame.

“It was a good way to end the regular season in front of the girls’ friends and family,” Coach Kimberly O’Connor said. “The girls played aggressively and with non-stop hustle. Coach Wickard and I were very proud of all the girls.”

St. Maries went 16-16 from the foul line and went on to win the game 69-15.
