St. Maries’ middle school wrestlers competed at the state championships this January.
Despite having no regular season, Coach Josh Harvey said he was proud of how the wrestlers competed after two weeks of practices leading up to the event.
“We won several matches in overtime, which brought out the grit that St. Maries’ boys have when they step on the mat,” Coach Harvey said. “Our boys were competing against all classes of middle schools. There are definitely some future St. Maries state champions in the group.”
Landon Tweedy was the top finisher for St. Maries, coming in second in the 147-pound weight class. Landon won two of his three matches.
Jerrett Brebner took home fourth place, winning three consecutive matches as he battled through consolation matches to earn a medal.
Other wrestlers competing for St. Maries included Kody Tefft, Michael Stewart and Kelby Harvey, who each split matches with 2-2 records on the day.
Kelby Harvey, Rylen Harvey and Gradyn Harvey competed in the Kids Festival Folkstyle tournament Jan. 18, one day before the state tournament, and each took home medals.
Rylen and Gradyn both took runner-up finishes, Rylen going 1-1 and Gradyn 2-1, while Kelby earned third place with a 2-2 record.
