An impromptu tournament turned into a surprise accomplishment for one Lumberjack wrestler last weekend.
St. Maries senior Sam Martin (138) pinned an opponent from Sandpoint in the first period of his team’s dual with the Bulldogs, in the process recording his 100th high school victory.
The dual-format event was put together days prior and was hosted at St. Maries High School, where Kellogg, Sandpoint, Potlatch and Priest River dualed one another.
“He had no idea, but that’s just the kind of kid he is,” Coach Dennis Humphrey said. “He puts his nose to the grindstone and just works hard. It couldn’t happen to a better kid.”
The Lumberjacks had three wrestlers finish undefeated on the day, including Sam (138), Dylan Sotin (120) and Kyle Sibert (195).
“Everybody looked really good. We finally got to get our older kids onto the mat, and there were some really good matches,” Coach Humphrey said.
Trey Gibson (152) split matches, and Brock Anderson (106), Hunter Norris (132), Scott Sotin (170) and Ethan Kolar (145) also earned wins on the day.
Upcoming: The team is set to compete at the River City duals Friday and Saturday. Action begins Friday at 3:30 p.m. and resumes Saturday morning.
