St. Maries’ girls basketball team was given a chance to get an early lead over Bonners Ferry Nov. 19.

The Badgers missed their first eight shots.

Unfortunately for Coach Gary Krumheuer and the Lumberjacks, they did not shoot well, either, and with four minutes to play in the first period the score was tied, 2-2.

“We did not take advantage,” Coach Krumheuer said. “Again, we struggled breaking a press, but with only a 15-point deficit at halftime we left ourselves an opportunity to get back in the game.”

Bonners Ferry came out of halftime and hit five shots from beyond the arc, outscoring St. Maries 10-22 in the third frame of a 23-58 defeat for the Lumberjacks.

Tayla Janssen led St. Maries in scoring with six points to go with two rebounds.

Coach Krumheuer’s team turned the ball over 36 times in the loss, 16 coming in the first quarter.

“The girls played with tremendous energy on defense, but in order to be competitive we have to not only shoot better, but get more shots up. The way to do that is to cut our turnovers at least in half.”

The team traveled to Kendrick Nov. 16, going down 9-31 at halftime and falling 14-54.

“Another big turnover game, complicated by just 10 percent shooting from the field,” Coach Krumheuer said.

Stacie Mitchell put up five points and added three steals and three rebounds in the losing effort.

Up Next: St. Maries (0-3) returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 30 at Sandpoint. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Sandpoint High. The girls host Wallace (2-1 before Nov. 23 game at Kootenai) Thursday, Dec.2 at 7 p.m.
