Tyson JuarezThe American Legion Auxiliary has worked to support many veterans issues around the area.
Now, they are getting the next generation involved.
The Auxiliary has revived its Junior program and welcomes any area female from infancy to seventeen years old who has connections to a member of the American Legion.
The program is geared towards teaching youth about patriotism, respect for the American flag, helping military families, raising awareness of veterans issues, practicing leadership and demonstrating responsibility.
Juniors who participate in the program will be able to earn patches for their works, similar to earning badges in the Girl Scouts.
The program currently has four members. Three of the members join Jerzy Duarte who has been involved with Auxiliary functions for the last five years. Jerzy is joined by Karlie Morris, Davy Roedel and Christie Sotin.
“My mom and dad are part of the legion and they had me join to learn more about it,” Karlie said.
“I joined the junior auxiliary because I thought it was pretty cool,” Christie said.
“My dad was one (military member) and I really want to be one when I grow up so I want to learn more about it,” Davy said.
“What we are trying to do is prepare them to be adults and see the values and morals of the American Legion,” Auxiliary member Jeanne Johnson said.
Johnson said the juniors will participate in this year's Memorial Day services and will be involved in this month's poppy distribution. The group will also be active in various other Legion based projects in the community.
“One program we will be participating in is donating stamps for the wounded,” Johnson said. “This is a service organization dedicated to providing stimulating activity to U.S. Veterans through stamp collecting. The girls will be collecting, preparing and sending stamps to this organization, therefore helping vets beyond the St. Maries area.”
“These kids will have their red vests just like the auxiliary and hopeful itll get people to ask 'what does that mean?' Johnson said. “Hopefully it'll grow onto their classmates, and they'll be great representatives to teach others.”
Those who fit the criteria are invited to join the Junior Auxiliary. The cost is $4.50 for annual membership.
