A group of Fernwood locals took part in a snow carving competition in Driggs last week.
Anna Olson, Pam Mitchell, Marie Weber and Nina Ashmead were one of six teams to compete in the Driggs snow carving competition. The group participated in a week-long competition, starting their sculpture Monday, January 16 and having by 10 p.m., Friday, January 20 to complete their work.
This was the snow carving team’s first year back since Covid and the same group of four participated for multiple years prior to the pandemic.
Competitors had a week to carve their creations and only had access to hand tools.
The group were tasked with carving a creation out of an 8x8x8 block of compacted snow and this year their creation was named “the Great Carousel” representing a classic carnival staple.
Weber said she had come up with the idea for the carousel and had intended to do the design sooner.
“We intended to do the design about three years ago before the event was cancelled,” Weber said. “We had wanted to do it the next year but never got our chance.”
Though the group did not place this year, Weber said they thought the experience was fun and the event didn’t really cost the group any funds except gas to get to Driggs. Organizers of the event paid for hotels for each of the teams and provided meals as well.
Weber said the team is looking forward to next year’s competition and hope to get a win with whatever creation they come up with next.
When they do compete, Weber said they will be sure to share the voting website for the competition which anyone in Idaho can go to to vote for their favorite sculpture.
