St. Maries’ wrestling team has battled bouts of injuries and illness at different points.
One of them struck last week before the team left for the District Championships.
Despite again competing in a tournament shorthanded, Coach Dennis Humphrey’s team managed to earn 11 spots in this week’s state wrestling championships in Nampa.
“The kids wrestled tough,” Coach Humphrey said. “Worst-case scenario I was thinking we’d send about six, and best case maybe 12, so I can’t really complain. We’re taking a nice group.”
Trey Gibson was St. Maries’ highest finisher, winning the 170-pound district title behind three wins and no losses. Trey pinned each of his three opponents and takes a 37-8 record into this week’s state championships.
Landon Warren took second in the 285-pound weight bracket, losing 4-11 to a Clearwater Valley wrestler he beat earlier in the season.
“That was a heartbreaker,” Coach Humphrey said. “But hopefully that puts a fire under him.”
Jackson Nantell (285), Scott Sotin (220), Rustle Brusseau (182), Aiden Yearout (160), Maddie Johnson (G165) and Jerrett Brebner (138) each took third place and earned state berths, as did Peyton Lingo (98), Zach David (126) and Kody Tefft (145).
St. Maries finished second in team scores with a total of 252, behind Kellogg’s 384.
Up Next: St. Maries travels to the 2A State Wrestling Championships this week, slated for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa. Wrestling begins Thursday at 9 a.m.
